Swanley in the 12th century was known as Swanleg and its name probably derives from 'woodland clearing of the herdsmen'. Today the town is set close by Junction 3 of the M25 to the north east of Orpington. Fast trains to London (Blackfriars) take less than half an hour from Swanley Station.
Swanley town centre has a modern pedestrianised shopping complex with a large car park and local shops include a Post Office, Boots, Woolworth and Asda Superstore. Recreational facilities are provided in the White Oaks Sports Centre and Lullingstone Park Golf Course and Dartford Golf Course are both close by. The Olympic Leisure Centre in Beechenlea Lane also has a golf course, as well as a restaurant. Excellent road and rail communications bring London, Orpington and Croydon close to hand and there is a regular bus service to Dartford, Orpington, Sidcup and London (Victoria).
