Italy - The arc of Liguria

The Riviera di Levante, Italy's luminous coastline from Genoa to La Spezia, is the perfect retreat.

The coast from Genoa to La Spezia is a haven of fabulous fishing villages often perched high up on the hillsides overlooking the sea and many are fairly inaccessible. The upturned hanging boats off the Via Maggio in Tellaro by Lerici are still hauled down to the small beach where there are door handles in the sign of the Octopus. Many years ago an Octopus saved the village from pirates as they heard the peals of warning being rung in the church of St George‘s. Today the village is charming with its still delightfully small market square off which is a bookshop reminding visitors of the many poets to have stayed here. At one end a flight of stairs leads you downwards to the harbour and the other takes you back past views over tiled rooftops of the church to the road to Lerici. Come and visit and you‘ll want to stay. Perfectly situated just south of the autostrada Lucca is a little under two hours and the best ski resorts in the Dolomites about four hours when the weather is kind. Ryan Air has cheap flights to Genoa and Pisa.

Italy - THE PONTE VECCHIO

Ever since Robert Browning took Elizabeth Barrett Browning to live in Florence, Tuscany has long been a favourite venue of the English.

Bisected in the South by the River Arno and traversed by the medieval bridge, the Ponte Vecchio, the city of Florence remains one of the jewels of Western culture. The landscape of Tuscany, with its soft blue hills, neat rows of vines and slim spires of pencil cypresses enfolds its old and beautiful stone-built towns and villages: Chianti, Lucca, San Gimingnano, Montepulciano and Sienna, all as romantic as they are inspiring. Within easy reach of these bases is Florence itself with the palaces of the Medici linked by Vasari's corridor over the old bridge and fabulous works of art within it.
