Italy - a retreat in Liguria A monastery can be the perfect base to explore an area and in Italy there are several. The Carmelite Monastry of Sante Croce in Bocca di Magra between the Gulf of La Spezia and the Apuan Alps has attractive rooms in the renovated convent where you can stay provided you have booked well in advance. There is not much to be seen now of the old monastry itself but its location is spectacular. Situated high above the sea shore in secluded gardens and olive groves the monastry has magnificent views towards Colonata and the Carrara mountains bleached white by the marble quarries. It is just a short steep climb back up from the sea for breakfast. The monastry is approached by a winding lane from the waterside village of Bocca di Maggra with its delightful shops and restaurants spread out along the foreshore. Countless boats depart in the morning for Portovenere and Lerici returning in the evening in an unbroken procession. http://www.monasterosantacroce.it
